Gath-er-ing, an exhibition of print collages by artist Ina Kaur, opened Jan. 14 and continues until Feb. 22 in MCC’s Overbrook Gallery.
“Gath-er-ing is a series of print collages which celebrate the diverse uniqueness we share as individuals,” said Kaur, a multidisciplinary artist born in New Delhi, India. “These collages vary in sizes and utilize various print processes, bringing together our complex yet basic need to coexist. In this global cultural environment where identities and boundaries converge, one seeks to identify oneself.
“Our complex identities are defined and influenced by our history, society, and the culture of our immediate surroundings. In this postmodern and postcolonial global environment, we stand at a crossroads where nationalities and, localities intersect.”
Kaur, who resides in Tampa, earned her bachelor’s degree from Punjab University in India and her master’s degree from Purdue University. She oversees the University of Tampa Print and Drawing Department. Her artworks are included in numerous permanent collections.
In her studio research, Kaur combines various processes including print media, drawings, and installation. Her work has been showcased in national and international exhibitions. She has received numerous travel grants for professional development, residencies and excellence awards.
Kaur’s current research investigates how her work is affected by personal hybrid identity. The theoretical basis for the discussion includes theories and readings involving post-colonialism by Homi K. Bhabha, deconstruction by Jacques Derrida, and Carl Jung’s notion of universal symbols.
