MCC Honors Student Artists

The 49th Annual MCC Student Art and Design Exhibition award winners were selected on June 20 by Brett Colley, Assistant Professor of Art at Grand Valley State University and MCC exhibiting artist during the fall 2012 semester.

Receiving cash prizes were:

  • $400 First Place: Kathie Thompson of Fruitport for her “Proposal Project” painting
  • $300 Second Place: Michelle Thompson of Fruitport for her “Spirit House” ceramic sculpture
  • $200 Third Place: Linsea Gaither of Grand Haven for her simulated texture drawing
  • $100 Honorable Mentions: Michael Vallie of Muskegon for his abstract still-life drawing, Noah Sweet of Muskegon for his untitled ceramic sculpture, Maureen Rhoads of Montague for her untitled print, and Samantha Kniat-Escareno of Muskegon for her “Save the Whales” graphic design project.

Meanwhile, the President’s Purchase Award for the MCC Art Collection went to Hannah Edwards of Grand Haven for her juxtaposition project painting. This piece has been acquired for permanent display on campus.

A high point of the year for the Arts and Humanities Department at MCC, the exhibition features artwork of outstanding merit produced by MCC’s leading student artists over the past academic year.

The artwork is selected by MCC’s art faculty from a total of several thousand pieces produced during the past year by approximately 400 students. Only a small portion of this total amount comprises the exhibit.

The exhibit continues through September 11 in the Overbrook Gallery. Summer hours are 9am-4:00pm Monday-Friday. Please call 777-0324 for more information.
