Popular Labor Lecture Series Returns to MCC

Lectures last year included MEA Negotiator Stan Burnell, MCC Instructor Nicholas Budimir, Former State Rep. Mary Valentine and Brent Gillette of the AFL-CIO.The popular Muskegon Community College Labor Lecture Series, which debuted last year, returns to campus for the Fall 2014 semester.

Coordinated by MCC Sociology Instructor Nicholas Budimir and featuring labor leaders, community members and academics as guest speakers, the series takes place each Wednesday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. in Stevenson Center Room 1100.

This year’s topics include: Labor and Working Class History, Life in the Workplace, Workplace Justice, Minimum Wage/Living Wage Controversy, “Right to Work” Legislation, Collective Bargaining, Race and Gender in the Workplace, and the Future of Organized Labor.

Related events include the Michigan Sociological Association Conference being hosted by MCC on Oct. 24-25, a labor-themed bus trip to Detroit, and possibly a play.

Budimir said that interest individuals may: attend the lecture series for free; register for the class, titled History/Political Science 220, for full credit; or audit the class and those over 65 years of age would merely pay the cost of registration.
