The Jayhawk Baseball team earned a split on opening day of the 2023-2024 season at the Ripken Experience. They defeated Penn State Hazelton 12-1 in 5 innings before dropping a tight 3-2 decision to Penn State York.
Nate Lovell (Tri County) collected 3 hits in 3 at bats for the Jayhawks on the way to the run rule win. Austin Fowler (Holton) was also perfect at the plate going 2-2 with a walk. Also collecting multiple hits were Mason Brunworth (Mona Shores) and Joe Handley (St. Jean de Brebeuf). Tanner Tresemer (Zeeland East) picked up 4 RBI. Southpaw Cody Matuz (Fruitport) earned the win with 4 innings of work. He gave up 5 hits and 1 one with 8 strikeouts. Drew DeBlake (Fremont) worked the bottom of the 5th.
In the nightcap MCC held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the 7th but Penn State York scored twice for the walk off. MCC outhit their opponents but were hurt by 3 defensive errors. Brock Thornton (Coldwater) was 2-3 with an RBI and Tresemer stayed hot going 2-4. Curtis Ellis (Norwell) got the start and he pitched a good game, giving up 3 hits and 1 un-earned run in 6 innings of work. Trevor Garrett (Clarkston) got the loss in relief.
MCC is 1-1 in the young season. They return to action on Tuesday, 3/5.
