MUSKEGON QAULIFIES FIVE WRESTLERS TO THE NJCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT Mott Community College – Flint, MI – NJCAA Great Lakes District – February 17th, 2024
The Jayhawk Wrestling team qualified 5 wrestlers to the NJCAA National Tournament. The top 5 finishers in each weight class qualified and there were 6 wild card selections. Leading the way for MCC was sophomore Rice Robins (Holton) with his 3rd place finish at 174 pounds. Robins is now a two-time NJCAA National Qualifier. Four other Jayhawks will be joining Robins in Council Bluffs, IA including sophomore Parker Holt (Whitehall) who finished 5th at 165 pounds, freshman Caleb O’Neal (Fruitport) who finished 5th at 285 pounds, and 6th place finishers Joe Perez (Lakeview) at 133 pounds and Hunter Leonard (Fruitport) at 184 pounds, who both earned wild card berths. “I’m extremely proud of this team,” said first year coach Cody Carpenter. “It hasn’t been the easiest season and they have toughed it out, worked extremely hard, and made the best of it. These 5 guys fulfilled their quest of getting to the big dance, but I don’t want to overlook the season that Ryan Reno (Negaunee) and Riley Wentworth (Whitehall) had; they both fell just short of qualifying. They have both been crucial to the team.”
The Jayhawks will travel to the NJCAA National Championships at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 1st and 2nd.
