Christian Author to discuss controversial new work

Muskegon Community College (MCC) lecture series continues as the Department of Social Sciences welcomes author and Christian Ethicist Dr. David Gushee on campus March 14 at 6:00 PM in the Sevenson Center, room 1300, to discuss his new work, Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Gushee’s new publication examines the intricate relationship between religion and contemporary politics, while questioning the apprehension among certain segments of American Christians towards societal changes over the past five decades. His lasted work, meanwhile, explores the threat authoritarian reactionary Christianity poses on the democratic fabric of society.

Hosted by MCC Sociology Professor Nicholas Budimir, Gushee will also sit down for a discussion titled “The Minister Meets the Marxist,” Wednesday, March 14 at 12:30 PM in the Gerber Lounge at MCC. Budimir says the conversation aims “to ruin dinner,” as the two will discuss religion, politics, faith, and poverty. Audience discussion is encouraged at the event.

“Dr. Gushee’s visit to MCC is in the hopes of having a potentially constructive conversation across traditions and a spirited defense of democratic traditions in a time when authoritarianism is on the rise,” said Budimir. “At an institution of higher education, we must have these conversations about societal values, how to think, and how to model constructive dialogue between folks with different worldviews.”

Gushee is a prominent figure in contemporary religious discourse, notably recognized for his involvement in a community of scholars—both Christian and secular—offering critical perspectives on the politicization and authoritarian trends within modern Evangelicalism. In 2014, Gushee sparked controversy within conservative Christian circles by advocating for full LGBTQ inclusion in church, theology, and broader culture. His 2020 publication, “After Evangelicalism: A Path to a New Christianity,” served as a guide for individuals undergoing faith deconstruction.

In his latest work, Gushee advocates for the preservation of democratic values while equipping Christians and others with resources for resistance.
