Festival aims to celebrate Native American Culture and Resiliency

The Muskegon Community College (MCC) Global Awareness Festival returns this year on Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, March 21, 2024, at MCC’s main campus. This year’s festival, “Native Voices: Voices, Perspectives, and Celebrating Resiliency,” will showcase the rich tapestry of Native American culture, featuring presentations by local Native citizens, student panels, performances of dance and drumming, artisan vendors offering their works, food and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.

Attendees will be treated to an authentic Native American drumming introduction followed by addresses from Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Ogema (“Chief”) Larry Romanelli, as well as MCC President, Dr. John Selmon. The event is hosted by Department of Social Sciences Anthropology Instructor, Dr. Evin Rodkey.

“MCC is beyond proud to provide a platform for the vibrant voices and perspectives of our Native American communities,” said Rodkey. “This festival is a celebration of resilience, heritage, and cultural diversity, and we invite everyone to join us in honoring and learning from our Native community members.”
