Award-winning author Heather Sellers, a Hope College English professor, will speak on Nov. 14 at MCC as a part of its 2012-13 Lecture Series. The talk begins at 7 p.m. in Stevenson Center Room 1100. It is free and open to the public. A question-and-answer period will follow.
Sellers is author of the memoir You Don’t Look Like Anyone I Know, a 2011 Michigan Notable Book of the Year. She will discuss her neurological condition, prosopagnosia—more commonly known as face blindness—and how it has affected both her personal life and her writing.
Instead of recognizing people by their faces, Sellers explains, people with prosopagnosia “use voice, gait, jewelry, and context. You just have to use common sense.”
Sellers has not allowed the disorder to dampen her spirit or keep her from pursuing her passion to teach. “If you’re friendly and say hi to everybody, maybe no one will know you don’t recognize them.”
Sellers has been featured in The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, and Time, and is a frequent contributor to The Sun and to O: The Oprah Magazine.
