Muskegon Community College’s chapter of the national honor society Phi Theta Kappa was recognized at the Michigan Regional Convention in Traverse City on May 17 with several awards.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than two million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 states, and U.S. territories, including 31 chapters in Michigan.
The award winners from MCC’s Beta Xi Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa were:
- Michigan Region Scholarship ($250 award) – Hunter Koster
- Michigan Region Distinguished Advisor Award – Kelley Conrad
- Michigan Region Distinguished Chapter Member Award – Jonathan Mendicelli
- Michigan Region Distinguished Chapter Officer Team 2013 -14- Hunter Koster, Reid Klootwyk, Ricky Matthews
- Michigan Region College Project Winner (three-way tie for first place) – For the chapter’s work on the Yes! for MCC Campaign to seek voter approval for bonds to fund new and renovated MCC buildings. This project was led by Reid Klootwyk with assistance from Aubrey Meier.
- Talent Show – Shelinda Davenport, first prize for her dramatic portrayal of Audre Lorde, a self-described "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.”
- Chapter Yearbook – Second Runner Up for chronicling chapter projects and activities from May 2013 through May 2014 with words and photos. The project was conceived and created by Aliyah Mitchell.
To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa membership, an MCC student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and generally earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment at MCC.
