MCC concludes its Black History Month celebration with a movie and discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Stevenson Center Room 1304. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
The film, “The House We Live In,” is a segment of the renowned PBS documentary series “Race: The Power of an Illusion.” The film examines the history of red-lining or housing discrimination following the post-war housing boom. The discussion will be led by MCC Anthropology and Geography Instructor Papa N’Jai.
“It is an interesting thing to see how America has evolved over the centuries and that no matter where you go in this country, in Muskegon, Detroit, or Chicago for example, you see the diverse mosaic of cultures in society that contribute to it,” he explained. “We are celebrating the history of America, its people, and where it can go from here.”
He anticipates a large turnout with growing interest in these MCC lectures. He hopes to include college and high school students, MCC employees, and the community in the discussion
“I look forward to seeing these and other talks broadening community involvement, because there are just some things that cannot be contained in the classroom setting,” he added. “We can stimulate and enrich the minds of students and community as well.”
