MCC Celebrates Earth Week

Muskegon Community College is celebrating Earth Week April 21-25 with a movie and discussion, displays, recycling of electronics, a campus clean-up, games and prizes.

All week long, MCC and Nichols Paper & Supply, in partnership with Goodwill Industries, will be accepting electronic recyclables at the MCC parking lot adjacent to the tennis courts off the Marquette Avenue entrance. The small appliance items – computers, TVs, fax machines, laptops, printers, cell phones and other computer-related electronics in any condition – can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

MCC’s world-record holding electronic dragster, “Short Circuit,” will be on display all week in the college’s main entrance.

The multi-award winning documentary film “Bag It” will be shown Monday-Wednesday, April 21-23. The movie features an average man considering our dependence on retail store plastic bags. He discovers the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.  Sponsored by the MCC Sustainability Committee, the 65-minute film will be shown on Monday, April 21, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Overbrook Theater; on Tuesday, April 22, from noon-1:30 p.m. in Stevenson Center Room 1100; and on Wednesday, April 23, from noon-1:30 p.m. in the Blue and Gold Room. Admission is free and open to the public. A short discussion follows the film. Door prizes will be awarded, including: $25 worth of groceries, Joe Chan’s Bistro $10 gift certificate, Culver’s $10 gift certificate, MCC reusable mugs, reusable fabric bags, and a special surprise!

On Tuesday, April 22, volunteers wishing to participate in an MCC Campus Clean-Up should meet in the small parking lot on Quarterline Rd. and Marquette Ave. at 3:30 p.m. The event continues until 5 p.m.

On Wednesday, volunteers wishing to help clean-up the Kasey Hartz Nature Trail should meet at the trail entrance at 8 a.m. The event continues until 9:30 a.m.

On Thursday, April 24, “Recycle…Game On!” will take place from 9-11 a.m. in the Student Union with prizes being awarded for successful answers to recycling questions. At 1 p.m., an informational talk, “Recycling 101: How to Recycle at MCC and at Home,” will be held from 1-2 p.m. in Stevenson Center Room 1100. The event is free and open to the public.
