Muskegon Community College will commemorate Veterans Day with an inspirational military tribute, music and testimonials on Friday, Nov. 9, beginning at 11 a.m. on campus.
Ceremonies commence at the main entrance flagpole, where a seven-member squad of MCC military veterans will carry flags representing the U.S., the five military branches and the Prisoners of War. An honor guard from the Muskegon High School Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) will conduct the flag-raising ceremony. The MCC military veterans will fire a 21-gun salute and MCC music instructor Daniel M. Meyers will play “Taps.”
Participants will then enter the main building and stop at the MCC Veterans Memorial Wall, designed and dedicated last year by the MCC Veteran Students Organization, where the Honor Guard will lay a wreath.
Proceeding to Collegiate Hall, MCC President Dale Nesbary will offer welcoming remarks, followed by MCC Board of Trustees member and U.S. Air Force veteran Nancy Frye. The Jaywalkers, a six-member men’s choir who are members of the MCC College Singers, will perform a medley of military songs and the branch anthems of the Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force and Navy.
Current MCC student, Sgt. Robert Bowyer, a U.S. Army veteran who served tours in Afghanistan and is a Psychological Operations Tactical Operator in the U.S. Army Reserves, will offer his insights into being a veteran. Retired MCC instructor Don Goodman will discuss the history of veterans at MCC. Wounded military veteran and current MCC employee Sgt. James Potter will speak about those who served and were injured. He participated in two deployments to Iraq during his nine years of Army service. The college’s Jaywalkers will sing “God Bless America.” Dr. John Selmon, vice president of student services at MCC, will provide the closing remarks. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
