The Muskegon Community College (MCC) Center for Theater’s season continues this April 4 – 6, 2024, at 7:30PM and April 7, 2024 at 3PM as the Overbrook Theater presents the two-person play, “I AND YOU.” *
Winner of the 2014 Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award Winner and finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Playwright Prize, “I AND YOU” is a haunting play about the strange and transcendent connections between us all.
It tells the story of Anthony, who unexpectedly arrives at his classmate Caroline’s door with an urgent assignment from their English teacher and a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Despite being home-bound due to illness, Caroline is quick-witted and sardonic, while Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As the two teenagers bond over poetry, music, and shared secrets, they uncover a deeper mystery that has brought them together, leading to a profound exploration of life’s complexities.
Written by playwright Lauren Gunderson, the Overbrook Theater extends a warm welcome to Allyson Paris; as “I AND YOU,” marks her directorial debut at MCC.
“I AND YOU has been an incredible opportunity for Cece Davis and Maxim Chalupa –two talented MCC artists–to stretch their acting muscles with the absolutely stunning script by Lauren Gunderson,” said Paris. “Audiences can expect to be swept up in the joy, humor, depth, and poignancy of the show as they watch two teens learn to connect over life, death, music, and poetry.”
