Carl Wilkins, an eyewitness to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, will educate and inspire audiences with his riveting presentation “World Outside My Shoes” on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at MCC’s Stevenson Center Room 1100.
The free presentation, which begins at 12:20 p.m., is sponsored and underwritten by the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies of Muskegon.
Wilkins’ multimedia presentation uses Google Earth, his own pictures, and the Web to tell the story of what his family experienced during the genocide. He doesn’t focus on the horror and loss nearly as much as on those who stood up against the wrong as the world stood by for three months while 800,000 men, women and children were murdered for being Tutsi.
In his presentation, Wilkins also shares the amazing recovery process Rwanda has been going through for the last 19 years, including the vital role of women in government and the private sector.His purpose is to leave tools and hope, enabling those in attendance to make a positive difference locally as well as internationally.
The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies is a community-based organization dedicated to recalling the events of the Holocaust, remembering those who perished and teaching future generations about the injustice of bigotry and racism.
