The Jayhawk Women’s Basketball team won their opening game of the NJCAA Region XII District B Tournament by defeating Delta College soundly, 89-53.

During the regular season the two teams split but it was a different Jayhawk team tonight. The teams played a fairly even 1st quarter before MCC exploded for 28 points while holding Delta to only 8 points in the 2nd quarter. MCC held a commanding 45-23 lead at half time and they came out with a purpose, putting up 26 and 18 respectively in the 3rd and 4th quarters for the easy win. MCC forced the Pioneers into 33 turnovers that accounted for 29 points and they were 23-27 from the free throw line. “What a great game tonight,” said Coach Jason Cooper. “Our team got it done on both ends of the floor and I’m very proud of them.” Ty’veonna Davis (Muskegon) had a monster night for MCC with 31 points, 13 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists. Also in double digit scoring were Arrionna Williams (Reeths-Puffer) with 22 points and McKena Wilson (Calvary Christian) with 11 points.

The Jayhawks will travel to Mott Community College to take on St. Clair County Community College in the semi-finals of the tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Thursday, 3/7.
