MCC Professor, Greek Orthodox officials to present lecture of Byzantine influence on early Christian faith

Byzantine Christian Tradition

Muskegon Community College’s Center for Experiential Learning is launching a series of free lectures that will explore the impact religion has made on the history of Western Civilization.

Muskegon Community College Professor George Maniates, alongside Rev. Joseph Gingrich and William Neal of Annunciation Orthodox Church in Norton Shores will kick off the series on Thursday, October 26, as they present how Byzantine iconography, architecture, and symbolism played a role in spreading the early Christian faith.

This secular history program will trace the origins of Christianity during the Roman Empire to its later development into the Eastern Orthodox Church. The lecture will delve into the events, styles, and symbolism of the 2,000-year-old religion, as well as its impact on European History.

The event will be held at 6:30 P.M. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church located at 185 E. Pontaluna Road in Norton Shores, Michigan.

All are invited to the free lecture and presentation.

The MCC Center for Experiential Learning (CEL) was founded in 2009 to provide high-quality, interdisciplinary learning experiences that were key to engaging students and the community outside of the four walls of a classroom.  With a focus on doing, seeing, and experiencing, the Center has engaged thousands of students over its span, traveling throughout the USA and Europe and bringing in presenters to talk about many different subjects over the years.  CEL programming has opened the horizons of many in our community during this timeframe.

Established in 1926, MCC offers over 80 degrees and certificates. In addition, the college provides a variety of community resources including a planetarium, natural area, science museum, health and wellness center, art gallery, and golf course. Visit www.muskegoncc.edu to learn more.
