Students Gain Experience Helping Low Income Households

MCC is seeking student volunteers to expand free tax preparation services for low- to moderate-income households in West Michigan through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program of the Internal Revenue Service.

“The purpose of bringing this tax assistance service program to campus is to provide our students and other members of the community an opportunity to benefit from all the tax credits they have earned and keep all of their refunds without paying hundreds of dollars in paid preparer fees,” said Sally Birkam, dean of student success and campus life at MCC.

A local coalition of 15 local nonprofits that provide or support free tax preparation,  VITA Services of West Michigan is seeking  college student volunteers to help with the 2013 tax season. No previous experience is required. Volunteers will be required to complete online training provided by the IRS.

In addition to gaining valuable experience, students will build their resumes by volunteering as tax preparers, quality reviewers, greeters, appointment schedulers, financial coaches, or interpreters at any of 15 sites in Muskegon and neighboring counties. Students majoring in human services or business will find this to be a great opportunity to gain experience in their fields.

Applications must be received by early autumn in order for the training to take place. Interested persons should contact Amanda Grover at agrover@goodwillwm.org or by phone at (231) 722-7871, ext. 246.
